The Politics of Sports: Controversies and Debates
It is not easy to separate politics from sports – especially at the elite level. Many athletes see their sport as a platform on which to express their views and opinions, and many have used that opportunity, from US sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising black-gloved fists on the podium at the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem to Manchester United players Paul Pogba and Amad Diallo raising a Palestinian flag after their club’s recent victory in the Premier League.
Yet there is much debate about whether or not athletes should be allowed to engage in political activism, and some controversy over the extent to which they should be rewarded for doing so. The polarization of this debate is perhaps most visible in the fact that some athletes, such as Tim Tebow, have faced criticism for displaying anti-abortion banners during games while others, such as Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, have been celebrated for their pro-Israel activism.
